Alternative vehicles, such as electric bicycles and motorcycles, emerge as means of transport that aim to benefit the user in autonomy, economy and sustainability, as well as being options for leisure. Electric cars, in turn, are a trend, as the change in behavior demands alternatives that are less harmful to the environment.

After the pandemic, the way of getting around urban centers changed. There was a growing change in habits. In Brazil, the prospect is for an increase, on average, of 30% per year in the demand for electric bicycles in this decade. They cater to different age groups and fit into the routine of daily commutes.

“We strongly believe in this market”, says Eduardo Rocha, CMO at Caloi. The segment represents 2% of the national bike industry. “And the growth potential is more than 30% per year. The context of rising fuel prices has brought to light a new agenda on urban mobility. The cyclist is opting for more sustainable, healthy, functional products with enough autonomy to get to and from work or even for leisure.”

There is a new, healthier lifestyle that offers alternatives for those looking for fun and a means of getting around in a single product, says Thomas Edson, director of supply chain at Shineray do Brasil. “The demand for electric two-wheel solutions has been growing because consumers are increasingly looking for sustainable mobility. It is a behavior change related to society’s values.”

Behavior change

The search for a better quality of life and the concern with sustainability have brought a new way of thinking to many Brazilians, comments Rodrigo Gomes, commercial director of electric mobility at Atrio. “We believe that electric vehicles have become a trend all over the world. Increasingly, the search for products that do not impact the environment, as well as smart mobility alternatives, is growing.”

Although electric bicycles are still expensive equipment for most of the Brazilian population, the market is only growing. “We believe that this type of vehicle is a trend for all the advantages it offers. With the growth shown in recent times, it has everything to follow the same path that the electric car market lives”, says Edson Ogata, marketing manager at MYMax.

It is a booming market. Sustainable models have been increasingly sought after, says Diego Coelho, product manager at Goldentec. “With the bike lanes, transport has become safer in big cities. Adding to this the difference in values between fuels and the energy needed for recharging, electric bicycles become a clean, safe and cheap means of transport.”

Electric mobility raising

The growth of the bicycle market in recent months has already exceeded 50% and is expected to increase even more, mainly due to the constant rise in fuel prices, highlights João Paulo Argeri, commercial manager at Track&Bikes. “We have good sales expectations for the entire calendar year, and Father’s Day will be one of the dates to think about the change in habit we are experiencing.”

Electric bikes are here to stay, says Márcio Canzian, CEO and founder of Eletricz. “Although incentives are lacking and the tax burden is very high, the e-bike market grows at a rate of 30% per year because it brings other benefits, such as reaching the destination without being exhausted.”

The electric market is very broad and full of possibilities. It has grown in line with the concern for more sustainable solutions that emit less CO2. As a result, we have a scenario of constant sales increase, and commemorative dates such as Father’s Day tend to move the market, says José Ricardo, Toyota’s commercial general manager in Brazil. “Our sales expectation for this year in the Brazilian market is to exceed 190,000 electric cars.”

The wave of electric vehicles has been growing since 2018, says Raphael Quevedo, product manager at Super Soco. “It’s still a new product for the majority of people. However, the incentive policies and the increase in fuel prices favor the demand of the public that is getting to know the advantages of these products.”

It became a trend

When thinking about electrification, the direct correlation is with a highly technological, sustainable vehicle with differentiated performance, highlights Thiago Marques, Jaguar’s product manager. “Electrification is a path of no return; the numbers show how much the market is evolving. We can say that the trend is for solid growth in the segment in 2022, which could exceed 70,000 units sold in the country.”

Brazil currently has a circulating fleet of more than 80 thousand units, covering all classes of electrification, whether hybrid or electric vehicles. The market is evolving towards increasingly technological and sustainable projects. This year, according to information from the Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles (ABVE), the first quarter has already recorded growth of more than 115%, compared to the same period in 2021.

Spreading electrification is not just about evolving in the automotive sector, but also evolving as human beings and with the planet, says Felipe Yagi, marketing and communication manager at the Latin America Hub for Volvo Cars. “We are sure that this market will grow more and more. We have already sold more electric vehicles in the first three months of 2022 than in the whole of 2021, and we expect to sell around 3,500 units in 2022.”

For fathers who are looking for a sustainable and economical alternative to urban mobility, here are some options available in the Brazilian market, including bicycles, motorcycles and electric and hybrid cars.

ATRIO

The Dakar electric bike, MTB style, has a premium design with an integrated battery in the frame. 500 W engine with eight-speed Shimano gearbox and range of up to 100 km. It has aluminum structure. You can track bike and pedal information on its cycle computer, located on the handlebars, which also controls integrated lighting and engine assistance levels. The Chicago electric bike is foldable. It is easy to adjust the height of the handlebars and seat. It has a folding pedal, LED lighting and a single gear. Removable battery comes with key. It has a range of up to 90 km, five power levels with an integrated display on the handlebars, where it is possible to follow the bike and pedal information, control the integrated lighting and the engine assistance levels. The warranty for both models is one year and three months for accessories such as charger and cables.

CALOI

The latest release, the electric Mobylette, has a lowered tube to make it easier to climb onto the bike. It has a 350 W power hub motor and battery with a range of up to 30 km. Four-inch tires provide greater stability, absorb impact and offer comfort and performance. It has disc brakes, with activation sensor that turns off the engine during braking. Allows for faster and smoother braking.

A sportier option is the E-Vibe Elite FS, a Full Suspension Mountain bike with Steps electric system from Shimano, a bike geared towards trails and mountains. The model has a power of 250 W and a torque of 60 Nm, reaches a top speed of 25 km per hour and weighs 2,880 kg. It has Shimano BT-8035 integrated battery, 504 Wh capacity and Shimano DU-E6100 drive unit. It has IPX5 high water resistance. Its autonomy reaches up to 185 km.

ELETRICZ

The EZ-18 electric bike has a power of up to 350 W, reaches a maximum speed of 35 km/h and its autonomy can reach 40 km. The 48 V 10 Ah lithium battery is removable and lockable. Just remove the case and put it to recharge in a common socket. A full charge takes five hours. The bike has a cell phone holder, LCD display, basket, rear view, starter and alarm.

It has rear and front suspension, 10’’ rim, croup with backrest and footrest. It also has a light and arrow, and a color digital panel with all the navigation information. The acceleration can be activated 100% by the handle or with the aid of the pedals. The rear and front brakes are drum type and activate the rear brake light to ensure driver visibility. Its total weight is 36 kg

GOLDENTEC

The brand’s flagship electric bike model is the GT Mob. It is collapsible, compact and portable, which makes it easy to carry. It has a long-lasting, rechargeable, lighter and more sustainable removable battery. It has a range of up to 30 km on one charge, with consumption monitored by an LED panel. With throttle grip and 350 W motor, it can reach up to 25 km/h.

It has an autopilot, 14’’ pneumatic tire and disc brakes on both wheels, with safer and faster braking. Developed in resistant aluminum alloy, it weighs 16 kg and supports up to 120 kg. Comes with safety lights: rear brake light and button-controlled front LED headlight. It reaches full charge in three or four hours.

MYMAX

Scheduled for release on Father’s Day, the E-Bike MyWay 4.0 model will be available in black and red. Like all the others in the MYWay line, the 4.0 version is a versatile and functional electric bike, with a range of up to 50 km and a speed that can reach 25 km/h. It is a light and resistant equipment, with the aluminum frame.

The maximum weight supported by the e-bike is 120 kg. To recharge the 36 V 7.5 Ah battery, it takes three to five hours. It has 250 W of motor power and front and rear disc brakes for greater safety. It has a 16’’ pneumatic rubber tire and a folding pedal.

TRACK & BIKES

The TKE 29 rim 29 bike, available in black, has a front suspension and double-wall aero wheels. It has an aluminum frame in size 19.5”, supporting up to 110 kg. It has handlebars, seat post and crankset also made of aluminum and front suspension. It has 21 Shimano gears, Rapid fire lever system, size 29 aero rims and plastic grips. It has an adjustable fork seat, indexed transmission chain, front suspension and mechanical disc brake system.

Another bike, the TKE 26 rim 26, in white, has a front suspension and double-wall aero wheels. Its structure is reinforced with a steel frame, in size 18”, supporting up to 110 kg. It has fenders, front panel with battery consumption indicator, steel handlebars, saddle with two springs, armored electric module with rain protection and front suspension. SHINERAY DO BRASIL

The motorization of the SHE S electric motorcycle is one of the differentials, contributing to good performance, agility and zero carbon dioxide emissions. The 3,000 W electric motor enables a maximum speed of 90 km/h. The 72 V 35 Ah lithium battery is removable, allows 2,500 cycles, equivalent to six or seven years, and the recharge time is three hours on a regular socket. The model also allows the installation of an extra battery, reaching a range of 150 km.

The second model, SE-Bike, is an electric bike available in black, white and grey, which combines bold design with high performance and electric propulsion technology. The engine delivers 500 W of maximum power and reaches a maximum speed of 40 km/h with a range of 45 km. It has a 40 V 12 Ah lithium battery, and it takes six to seven hours to charge to 100%. The bike supports up to 150 kg.

SUPER SOCO

The brand’s flagship, Super Soco TC is an electric motorcycle with a classic design. Available in four colors, it has a removable and rechargeable lithium-ion battery that allows you to travel 60 km in sport mode and up to 100 km in economy mode. It is possible to put an extra battery and double the autonomy. The Bosch motor has high performance on the rear wheel with torque up to 150 Nm, 550 rpm, 92% energy efficiency, acceleration up to 3,000 W and tilt up to 17%. It has a combined CBS brake system, 240mm front and 180mm rear brake discs.

The Super Soco CPX Scooter is a 125cc equivalent electric model. Silent, it has a maximum power of 4,900 W, autonomy of up to 140 km and charging time, with fast charger, from three to five hours. It has a mousse sponge bench and aluminum and steel alloy frame. It reaches a top speed of 90 km/h and has hydraulic fork front suspension and mono-shock rear suspension. With the brand’s app, it is possible to connect with the cell phone and obtain information on the battery status and location of the scooter.

JAGUAR

A pioneer in launching a 100% electric luxury vehicle in the country, the brand highlights the I-PACE SUV. It is the only model to win the three categories of the World Car Awards, Car of the Year, Design of the Year and World Green Car (sustainable car of the year). The car has versatility and autonomy that reaches 470 km on the WLTP Cycle. Clean Energy Certification that guarantees the use of energy from renewable sources, 100% clean, in partnership with ZEG.

It has semi-automatic steering (ACC), panoramic glass roof with light and heat control, Meridian sound system, various interior combinations (seats and upholstery) and InControl Telematics connectivity technology: the driver has all vehicle management via smartphone. The model also has certified shielding. It is the only 100% electric SUV with full armor certification.

TOYOTA

The highlight is the models with hybrid flex technology, which makes it possible to use ethanol as a fuel, as it combines a combustion engine with two other electric ones, without having to charge them. The Corolla Sedan Hybrid, produced in Brazil, has a frontal pre-collision system, lane-keeping assistance system, automatic high beams and adaptive cruise control. It offers induction cell phone charger and front and rear parking sensors.

The Corolla Cross Hybrid is an SUV that combines a 1.8L VVT-i 16 V Atkinson flex cycle engine, with 101 hp at 5,200 rpm when fueled with ethanol, and 98 hp at 5,200 rpm when fueled with gasoline, and 14.5 kgfm of torque at 3,600 rpm (fueled with ethanol or gasoline). This engine works in conjunction with two electric motors (MG1 and MG2) with 72 hp and 16.6 kgfm of torque. The SUV’s transmission is the 10-speed Direct Shift. The hybrid battery is nickel-metal hydride. The vehicle has a regenerative braking system, which accumulates kinetic energy generated by braking and transforms it into electrical energy

VOLVO

In addition to plug-in hybrids, the highlight is the 100% electric, XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. Both vehicles have electric motors capable of generating 408 hp and 660 Nm of torque in an emission-free and noisefree drive. The XC 40 has a 78-kWh battery, a range of over 400 km on one charge and a fast-charging system. It has the One Pedal Drive, feature to make acceleration and braking through a single pedal. It has Google Assistant integrated via voice command to control temperature, exchange music and podcasts, send message and set destination.
