GOOD NEWS FOR E-COMMERCE IN 2021

Kelly Carvalho, Technical Adviser of the Federation of Traded Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo

Driven mainly by the demand for durable goods – but also by the success of the O2O (Online to Offline) model, which set the tone for commerce during the pandemic –, e-commerce should represent one of the best news of 2021 for the economy. FecomercioSP’s projection, based on data from the partnership with Ebit/Nielsen, is that the sector will have a 39% increase in revenue compared to 2020, a year marked by good sales performance.

In the case of durable goods, whose growth will be a significant 46%, the main impact comes from changing habits: with a much larger contingent of people working from home, demand has also increased not only for electronic devices, but also for how they are acquired. No wonder purchases of these products over the internet already represent 14% of the segment within retail. This means that, for every ten sales, at least one happens online

However, the investment in the O2O model is also significant, which meant that, by the end of 2021, e-commerce would account for more than 5% of this gigantic sector. There were 13 million new customers, which is another excellent news.

In 2022, growth should be lower: with a scenario of inflation and high interest rates, e-commerce can slow down and grow 7%. The same should happen with sales of durable goods. However, the new year should mark another leap: that of non-durable goods, such as food, beverages, and personal care items, in a context of widespread digitalization of establishments and the reopening of businesses.
