World E-Waste Day: A reminder for urgent action

World E-Waste Day was observed on October 14. The day was established in 2018 to raise awareness about the issue of excessive consumption and the improper disposal of broken or end-of-life electronics.
According to recent data from the E-Waste Monitor, one of the most comprehensive studies on the subject, 62 million tons of electronic waste were generated worldwide in 2022, and only 22% of that amount was recycled. The situation in Brazil is similar. The study shows that Brazilians generate, on average, 2.4 million tons of e-waste annually. Only 770,000 tons undergo recycling processes.
It is always worth reminding that this type of waste — whether batteries, appliances, or electronics — often contains components that, if handled incorrectly, can contaminate soil and water, thus impacting animals and humans. Additionally, these products, after being used, can be fully repurposed when properly recycled.
The National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) has seen progress, albeit slow, since it came into force. However, it cannot succeed without our participation. This is why it is important for all of us to do our part! The industry and retailers must take responsibility for reverse logistics, and consumers need to bring these products to designated collection points. The environment will thank us for it!
