Global warming, electronic waste, and solutions that can no longer be ignored

The warming of the planet affects us all. Scientist Carlos Nobre, senior researcher at the University of São Paulo (USP), warns that we are no longer facing climate change, but rather a climate emergency. The international scientific community estimates that the planet’s average temperature will rise by 2.5 °C by 2050, an alarming projection that could make several regions of the world uninhabitable.
One of the causes of the problem is the improper disposal of electronic waste.
Many of these wastes end up in uncontrolled dumps or landfills, where the materials decompose and release substances that contaminate the soil and groundwater. They can also generate greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate imbalance.
In addition, in several regions, the practice of burning this waste in open air as a method of disposal is common. This method releases extremely polluting compounds, which negatively impact the atmosphere and endanger the health of communities and various ecosystems.
In 2023, the research Electronic Waste in Brazil, carried out by Green Eletron, showed that 72% of Brazilians took some item to a collection point. Even so, 85% still keep electronic waste at home. Each correctly recycled electronic item prevents the emission of harmful gases and minimizes the demand for new natural resources.
The environmentally correct disposal of these materials is essential and requires the engagement of all sectors.Public awareness is especially necessary, as there are voluntary delivery points throughout Brazil.
