THE EVOLUTION OF CYBERCRIMES AND THE IMPACTS ON RETAIL

Kelly Carvalho
Advisor to the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP)

Data shows that cybercrime reached US$8 trillion in 2023 and could reach US$10.5 trillion by 2025, making it the most lucrative criminal economy in the world. In comparison, drug trafficking generates between US$500 billion and US$1 trillion annually, according to the United Nations (UN).

In Brazil, digital crimes already exceed traditional robberies and thefts. In 2023, fraud — many of which were virtual — grew by 13.6%, according to the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP). The ease of execution, high profit and low punishment have made cybercrime the preferred choice for organized groups.

Retail is one of the most impacted sectors. Financial fraud, system intrusions and data theft cause billions in losses. In addition to direct losses, attacks affect brand reputation and customer trust. Data leaks can lead to fines and a drop in sales. In 2023, Brazil recorded 103.1 billion attempted cyber-attacks, an increase of 16% compared to the previous year.

Law 14,155/2021 toughened penalties for cybercrimes, but threats evolve rapidly. Therefore, companies must invest in digital protection and educate consumers about online risks. For small businesses, the creation of a special line of credit for cybersecurity is urgent. Furthermore, a regulatory entity must ensure legal certainty and deal with emerging challenges. Only with an integrated approach between government, private sector and society will it be possible to reduce the consequences of cybercrime and ensure a safer digital environment.
